It isn’t easy to quit a vice, so most people wean themselves off slowly or find alternatives to their habit. Many drinkers find solace in caffeine while more and more smokers have been utilizing vaping as their nicotine replacement therapy. But how safe is vaping? Are there any negative side effects or illnesses that should be of concern? For years vapers were concerned about contracting bronchiolitis obliterans – more commonly known as “popcorn lung.” But after extensive research, vapers can breathe a sigh of relief.

What is Popcorn Lung?

Popcorn lung (bronchiolitis obliterans) is a respiratory condition in which air sacs in the lungs become scarred. It is serious and irreversible. The disease results in a persistent cough and shortness of breath. In 2000, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported several cases of popcorn lung in workers in a popcorn factory in Missouri. NIOSH (National Institute of Occupation Safety and Health) concluded that a chemical used to add the buttery flavoring to the popcorn (diacetyl) most likely contributed to the workers’ illness when they inhaled it.

Diacetyl and E-liquid

A study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found that the Diacetyl in e-cigarettes is linked to certain lung diseases, mainly popcorn lung. The group noted that more than three-quarters of flavored e-cigarettes and e-liquids contained the chemical. However, that statistic is both A) outdated, as e-liquid companies have removed Diacetyl from their ingredients and B) misleading, seeing as how there was never a direct correlation between the chemical in the e-liquid and anyone contracting the illness. To date, there have been no proven cases of anyone getting popcorn lung from vaping.

Guidelines and Regulations

Now that vaping is regulated like tobacco, there are stringent guidelines and regulations by the TPD(Tobacco Products Directive – all EU countries) to which companies must adhere. Each product needs to meet basic standards before they can be released on the market. Major e-liquid companies like Element E-Liquid continues to remain in good standing, producing quality vaping products.
